En 1965, la prohibición de la prensa independiente fue oficializada por el Estado cubano, confinando cualquier intento de publicación autónoma a los márgenes de la clandestinidad y la persecución política. Tras una rigurosa investigación de campo, la serie fotográfica Lecturas difíciles documenta las publicaciones independientes y los proyectos editoriales alternativos de mayor impacto en los últimos años en el país. Debido a su distribución oculta, la visibilidad institucional y el conocimiento público de estos soportes es prácticamente inexistente en la isla.
Las imágenes escenifican cada una de estas publicaciones en entornos domésticos, íntimos y penumbrosos; atmósferas indefinidas que recrean el espacio anónimo, incierto e ignorado en el que habitualmente se introducen, leen y debaten estos materiales disidentes. Estas fotografías operan como documentos de otros documentos; un dispositivo de archivo que visibiliza aquellas redes de micro-verdades que permanecen ocultas para las estructuras del poder, pero que circulan de manera subterránea en el tejido social.

In 1965, the ban on independent press was officialized by the Cuban State, confining any attempt at autonomous publication to the fringes of clandestinity and political persecution. Following a rigorous field investigation, the photographic series Lecturas difíciles (Difficult Readings) documents the independent publications and alternative editorial projects with the greatest impact in the country in recent years. Due to their hidden distribution, the institutional visibility and public awareness of these media are practically non-existent on the island.
The images stage each of these publications within domestic, intimate, and dimly lit settings; indefinite atmospheres that recreate the anonymous, uncertain, and ignored space in which these dissident materials are routinely introduced, read, and debated. These photographs operate as documents of other documents; an archival device that makes visible those networks of micro-truths that remain hidden from power structures, yet circulate underground within the social fabric.
