Durante el siglo XIX y principios del XX en Cuba, las publicaciones impresas —tanto periódicos como revistas— brindaban habitualmente sus columnas y espacios a importantes escritores e intelectuales de la época establecidos en el exilio. Tras el triunfo de la Revolución cubana, esta política de apertura editorial fue erradicada por el Estado.
A partir de este hecho histórico, concebí un libro de artista que recopila las voces de destacados intelectuales cubanos contemporáneos en la diáspora, quienes colaboraron con textos creados específicamente para esta edición u obras inéditas. Cada autor aporta lecturas críticas sobre fenómenos diversos de la Cuba actual a través de una pluralidad de perspectivas: sociológica, artística, historiográfica y periodística.
El título del libro, La tercera pata, se apropia del título del ensayo incluido de Dagoberto Valdés: "La tercera pata o la necesidad de la sociedad civil para la gobernabilidad democrática en Cuba". El volumen asume la tesis central de este texto, basada en la premisa metafórica de que una mesa requiere de al menos tres patas para sostenerse de forma estable y confiable; un diagnóstico político que sitúa en el empoderamiento y articulación de la sociedad civil el elemento democrático indispensable e histórico que le falta a la nación.
Los textos reunidos se insertan sobre una selección de imágenes escaneadas de publicaciones cubanas emblemáticas de finales del siglo XIX y la primera mitad del siglo XX. La asignación de cada publicación se determinó bajo el criterio de establecer una coherencia orgánica entre el discurso del autor y el perfil editorial del medio rescatado, consolidando una relación de archivo entre autor/texto, discurso/temática y revista/periódico. El proyecto pretende transformar el libro en una obra móvil, un objeto artístico disperso en la cotidianidad que circule junto al espectador, convirtiéndolo en su principal coleccionista, espacio de convivencia y diagnóstico colectivo de la Cuba contemporánea.

THE THIRD LEG
Artist's book (Scanned images of historical publications and texts by Cuban intellectuals in exile).

During the 19th and early 20th centuries in Cuba, print publications—both newspapers and magazines—routinely opened their columns and spaces to prominent Cuban writers and intellectuals of the era established in exile. Following the triumph of the Cuban Revolution, this policy of editorial openness was eradicated by the State.
Based on this historical fact, I conceived an artist's book that compiles the voices of prominent contemporary Cuban intellectuals in the diaspora, who contributed texts created specifically for this edition or previously unpublished works. Each author provides critical readings on diverse phenomena of present-day Cuba through a plurality of perspectives: sociological, artistic, historiographical, and journalistic.
The book's title, La tercera pata (The Third Leg), appropriates the exact title of the included essay by Dagoberto Valdés: "La tercera pata o la necesidad de la sociedad civil para la gobernabilidad democrática en Cuba" (The Third Leg, or the Necessity of Civil Society for Democratic Governance in Cuba). The volume embraces the central thesis of this text, based on the metaphorical premise that a table requires at least three legs to stand in a stable and reliable manner; a political diagnosis that places the empowerment and articulation of civil society as the indispensable and historical democratic element that the nation lacks.
The gathered texts are overlaid onto a selection of scanned images from iconic Cuban publications from the late 19th and first half of the 20th centuries. The allocation of each publication was determined by the criterion of establishing an organic coherence between the author's discourse and the editorial profile of the rescued media, consolidating an archival relationship between author/text, discourse/theme, and magazine/newspaper. The project intends to transform the book into a mobile work, an artistic object dispersed in everyday life that circulates along with the viewer, turning them into its primary collector, a space for coexistence, and a collective diagnosis of contemporary Cuba.
